Hemorrhoids are swollen and irritated veins in the anus and rectum. They usually occur as a result of extra pressure on these veins. They can develop internally– inside the rectum or externally- under the skin around the anus. They are very common and occur in about half of the population over age 50. Hemorrhoids are very common during pregnancy, as the pressure of carrying a baby puts extra stress on the vessels in the pelvic area.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are rarely dangerous but can be recurrent and painful. Fortunately, there are several treatments for hemorrhoids and several ways to prevent them altogether. Discover symptoms, treatments, causes, and risk factors of hemorrhoids with CheckPoint Urgent Care.
Causes of Hemorrhoids
The most common causes of hemorrhoids are chronic constipation, straining during bowel movements, and prolonged sitting on the toilet. These activities all interfere with blood flow to the veins, causing it to pool and enlarge the vessels. During pregnancy, as the uterus enlarges, this can also put excess pressure on the veins in the pelvic area.
Straining during bowel movements increases the pressure in the anal canal and pushes the hemorrhoids against the sphincter muscle. The connective tissue that can hold internal hemorrhoids in place can weaken as one age, causing them to prolapse. Studies have shown that those with hemorrhoids have higher resting anal canal tone– meaning that even when not in use, the smooth muscle of the anal canal tends to be tighter than average.
Symptoms of Hemorrhoids
Symptoms of hemorrhoids can depend on the type of hemorrhoid-
-
- Internal hemorrhoids lie inside the rectum. They usually can’t be seen or felt and rarely cause discomfort. But straining while going to the restroom can cause:
- Painless bleeding during bowel movements. There might also be small amounts of blood in the toilet or on tissue paper
- A prolapsed hemorrhoid is where an internal hemorrhoid pushes through the anal opening. This can cause pain and irritation
- External hemorrhoids are under the skin around the anus. Symptoms of external hemorrhoids can include:
- Itching or irritation in the anal area
- Pain or discomfort
- Swelling around the anus
- Bleeding
- Internal hemorrhoids lie inside the rectum. They usually can’t be seen or felt and rarely cause discomfort. But straining while going to the restroom can cause:
- Thrombosed hemorrhoids occur when blood pools in an external hemorrhoid and causes a clot, or a thrombus. Thrombosed hemorrhoids can cause:
-
- Severe pain
- Swelling
- Inflammation
- A hard, discolored lump near the anus
Treatment of Hemorrhoids
Relief from hemorrhoids can come in the form of many simple at-home treatment methods. For the occasional hemorrhoid flare-up, try one of the following methods:
- Adding more fiber to your diet. Whether it’s from a supplement, from foods or both, adequate fiber and water intake fiber softens the stool and makes it easier to pass, reducing pressure on hemorrhoids
- Getting more exercise. Even moderate exercise, like walking for 20- 30 minutes can help stimulate bowel function
- Don’t wait. When you have the urge to go to the bathroom, go immediately. When stools back up, this can cause more pressure in the area and lead to straining.
- Get topical relief. Over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams, like Preparation H, are available and can temporarily soothe pain. Witch hazel wipes can also provide cooling relief. Sitting on a cushion as opposed to a hard surface can help reduce the swelling of existing hemorrhoids and prevent new ones.
Risk Factors for Developing Hemorrhoids
The risk of developing hemorrhoids increases as we age. As the tissues that support the veins in the anus weaken, they can stretch. Pregnancy is also a risk factor for developing hemorrhoids as carrying a baby puts pressure on the anal region.
You can reduce your risk of developing hemorrhoids by:
- Eating a healthy diet, rich in fiber and lots of liquids
- Limiting the amount of time you sit on the toilet
- Managing constipation and preventing straining
- Maintaining a healthy weight
